The work is reflective of personal evolution, family genetics, defects and strengths,
and a nation dealing with internal and external turmoil. It’s a fusion of, ruin and
recovery, biology and physics, meditation and visualization, and a personal
investigation of how each intertwine.
AMPHIBIAN SERIES
This collection of paintings was originally inspired by the disturbing news relating
to the extinction of frogs and how global warming has affected their habitat. My childhood
was filled with streams of tadpoles and frogs in small towns. I utilized my memories of
the frogs, my family, and my relationships and infused human like characteristics/scenarios
that relate to ones childhood, frogs' fantasies and special moments in my life to create
these images.
HAT SERIES
Since 2003, the Vietnamese-fusion of culture, tradition and ritual has greatly influenced
my images and I have developed a new appreciation, admiration and understanding for the
people of Vietnam. The last 45 paintings that I completed from 2004-2008 were largely
developed around the idea of exploring the beauty and the over all feel from the people of
Vietnam; their strength of past generations that keep the traditions alive. I focus on the
theoretical push and pull of challenges of different cultures intertwining; particularly of
this family & tradition of a distant culture thriving today.
